DESIGN SPOT – Escape Plan Designs

May 28, 2010

This is the second post in my new regular column, DESIGN SPOT, which features hot interior designers, architects, interior decorators as part of an endeavour to support and nurture our industry. I must say a special thanks to the talented Thea Samios from Thea & Sami, who inspired this series with her own Friday Follower posts on her blog.

Here are a few words from Ali Boynton, Interior Designer and Director of Escape Plan Designs

What services does Escape Plan Designs offer?

Escape Plan Designs provides a personalised design service to like-minded small businesses and individuals with a strong focus on community and  sustainability. With industry links to branding specialists, we can provide completely integrated concepts in interiors and branding to assist with successful business development. Escape Plan Designs can also provide project coordination services to make sure the journey is as smooth as possible.

Describe your background and what led you to starting your business?

I have seven years industry experience both locally and abroad throughout a variety of industry sectors including Retail, Corporate Fit Out, Residential, Hospitality and Exhibitions, but wanted to focus on a more sustainable approach to the Interior Design work I was undertaking. I am a Green Star Accredited Professional and I believe that in the construction industry we can make an enormous and positive impact on how we tread on this earth and wanted to be more responsible in my approach to design than I had had occasion to do whilst working for others. This let to the inception of Escape Plan Designs.

How did you come up with your business name?

Escape Plan Designs evokes images of getting away to the places you’d rather be. I want to design and create spaces people want to go to… whether it is a better office environment which eliminates “Monday-itis”, your favourite cosy cafe where you love to read the paper in peace or turning your home into the retreat you’ve always dreamed of.  I want to make these spaces destinations for personal fulfilment and enrichment that inherently have an environmental conscience.

What kinds of projects are you working?

A real mix actually, which suits my varied background and helps keep me up to date with what’s going on in all sectors. I am pleased to say that most of my clients have a like-minded attitude to the environment and embrace the sustainable  aspects of the designs. I currently have a few residential jobs on the go, but am also doing some commercial work here and there as well.

What are the most important things for you to communicate through your designs?

  • Strong client focus – I like to provide a highly personalised response to the brief.
  • Integrated concepts, where all decisions are informed by the initial concept so all elements read as a whole.
  • Sustainability as a way of life, because we need to be kind to the world that nurtures us.

Are there any specific design influences in your work or do you have a signature style?

I would have to say that I have a fairly eclectic style which has been especially influenced by my time in the UK. I marry the Old-World with the New and emphasise traditional hand-crafted workmanship; recognising it, not discarding it. I tend to introduce quirky details as I always like to add an element of surprise and I have always incorporated a strong use of colour to create contrast and depth.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

As a small business owner I am really interested in staying local and supporting other small business and individuals; helping them improve their working and relaxing environments. I am especially interested in collaboration with local artists and designers from different fields too, whether it is graphic designers, fashion or arts and crafts and how these collaborations might enhance each individual’s work as well as create a broader understanding of the creative world we share. I am particularly excited to see how the Damask – Falling Leaves wallpaper by KT Doyle is going to come up in my latest fit out! It’s fantastic to work with folk who are just starting out too and making a real go of it in these challenging but exciting times!
