DESIGN SPOT – Phil Taylor Painting & Decorating

July 22, 2010

Today’s DESIGN SPOT features experienced painter and decorator, Phil Taylor. Since relocating to Brisbane from the UK, he has fast become the interior industry’s go-to-guy for both residential and commercial wallcovering projects. Here, Phil tells us a little about where he’s come from and what he does…

What services do you offer?

I offer the complete painting and decorating service – painting (both interior and exterior). But, my personal preference and specialist field is wallpapering, for which I am most renowned.

Describe your background and what led you to starting your business?

I have been painting and decorating for 27 years. I began an apprenticeship in England as soon as I left school, and as time progressed I began to run my own business. I found I excelled at wallpapering and soon built a reputation as a wallpapering specialist. For the last two and a half years I have lived and worked here in the Brisbane area, where, now established, I once again find my wallpapering services in huge demand!

What kinds of projects are you working?

The majority of my work is mainly residential, but I have wallpapered several nightclub/bars in the city (Brisbane), hotels, cafes, and restaurants.

What is your view on wallpaper today?

Wallpaper is becoming ever more popular, some of the designs on offer are amazing “a painted wall is a feature, a wallpapered wall is a statement”… (that’s one of mine!). There are some very talented designers breaking through, offering a wide range to suit everyone’s taste, and  I think wallpaper will be around for a very long time. I hope so, it’s my passion!

Is there anything else you think you’d like mentioned?

All my work is through recommendation, due to the quality of my workmanship, and professionalism. I haven’t found the need to advertise yet, but have a website currently under construction.

How can we contact you?

For now, mobile: 0417 191 356 and email philandjo02@bigpond.com are best!

Thanks Phil! Looking forward to seeing your website up Phil and calling you for the next project!

For those of you who don’t know, I met Phil when he installed my Falling Leaves wallpaper at Space Furniture in Brisbane in 2009. He’s been installing my wallpaper ever since! So, it’s only fitting I share with you, in the image montage below, some of the installs he has completed for me…

Top Left & Top Centre: Falling Leaves wallpaper at Space Furniture, Brisbane (Ambassador Sterling/Clove colourway)

Centre Left & Centre: Laruche wallpaper at Laruche Bar + Supper Club, Brisbane (Bespoke wallpaper)

Top Right & Centre Right: Falling Leaves wallpaper at Elevation Coaching, Brisbane (Aniseed/Pearl and Evening Slipper/Moss)

Bottom Left & Bottom Right: Phil Taylor turns drab into fab with another two stunning wallcovering installation projects!

We don’t get asked to do much wallpapering, mainly painting in the last few years.

That’s interesting… Looks like the Australian market might be overtaking the UK market regarding the use of wallpaper now!
