DESIGN SPOT – Ari Jewellery

August 24, 2010

DESIGN SPOT introduces fabulous Brisbane-based jeweller, Ari Athans. I’ve known Ari for over 20 years. We met when I worked for Artworkers Alliance (now known simply as Artworkers), and Ari rented studio space in the Artworkers building. Ari has continued with her practice as a successful jeweller and painter, and has had her own shop and gallery open to the public for the past six years. Now that’s a milestone! Ari has opened up her gallery to feature the work of other creatives and collaborative projects, including the work of jeweller, Jane Bowring who I posted about here. Here’s what Ari had to say earlier…

What services do you offer?

I make contemporary Jewellery. A ready to wear collection and as well as commission pieces.

Describe your background and what led you to starting your business?

I initially studied geology, worked in the mining and exploration industry and then decided to take a few years off to study art. I decided to do jewellery and object design because it was a natural progression from geology. Having grown up in a small business, I was attracted to the lifestyle.

What kinds of projects are you working?

The Gallery/Workshop is an ongoing project. I have two shows a year where I launch product ranges. Just recently we launched Jane Bowring’s new works. A furniture designer is exhibiting in October.

What are the most important things for you to communicate through your work?

The preciousness and uniqueness of minerals, gems and geologic samples. When these materials are transformed into jewellery they take on the life of the wearer. The jewel is in a constant state of transformation.

Are there any specific influences in your work or do you have a signature style?

Bold, Pared back and raw!

How can we contact you?

Her work is so playful, whether child-like or architectural, they are always well considered, resplendent with stories. Delicious!
