Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2013 was announced in December 2012 and it is one of my favourite colours. 17-5641 Emerald is a brilliant jewel colour, which as Pantone muses, “enhances our sense of well-being by inspiring insight as well as promoting balance and harmony.”

The colour of new life, growth, renewal and prosperity, green truly evokes a mindset that favours positivity and is forward-looking. It allows our eyes to rest and rejuvenate and personally, I find these deeper, cooler shades of green peaceful and calming. Like diving into a deep, freshwater rock pool or lying at the foot of majestic fig trees in a rainforest.

In terms of it’s take up in fashion and homewares, people often love green, but are afraid to embrace it, unlike reds, blues and yellows. Even oranges, which once showed quite a leap of faith, courage and individuality if you were to incorporate them into your seasonal wardrobe or interiors palette are now common place. But, green is harder. It is very much part of the natural world, however we seem to embrace it less, even when all the major magazines and stores go into full promotion. Perhaps now though, we are braver than we’ve ever been and are ready to take it on at a larger scale…

Pantone translates the Fashion + Home reference 17-5641 for Emerald into a closest match with the Plus Series Coated reference 3278C. You can find more information on that here. It loses it’s brilliance in the Uncoated reference (I generally refer to the Uncoated swatches for my giclée prints), but can also gain intensity based on the stock it’s printed on.

I’m embarking on a new design commission and with it comes research into colours and colour combinations. I always look at the forecast colours, but ultimately my design and the commissioning client’s market will have the most bearing on final colour choices. At the end of the day, it’s always about what works best…
